Kansas's U.S. Senate race has drawn unusual national attention this fall, with Republican Sen. Roger Marshall defending his seat against Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton, a pastor whose campaign has made the contest more competitive than recent Kansas Senate races.

Marshall, a physician from Great Bend first elected to the Senate in 2020 after serving in the U.S. House, has campaigned on agriculture, health care costs and alignment with his party's national agenda. Hamilton has run on affordability, rural health care and the argument that Kansas's independent streak deserves a hearing in Washington.

Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since the 1930s, a streak both campaigns acknowledge — one as history to extend, the other as history to break. Statewide polling covered through the fall has suggested a closer race than that history would predict, one reason both parties have spent in Kansas this cycle.

The Senate race shares Tuesday's ballot with the open governor's race, all four Kansas U.S. House seats, a proposed constitutional amendment and state legislative contests — a long ballot for a midterm year.

Turnout mechanics favor no one automatically: advance voting in Kansas ended at noon Monday, so Tuesday's result rests on Election Day turnout in the state's population centers — Johnson County, Sedgwick County and the Kansas City suburbs — and the rural counties that anchor Republican margins.

Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day and received within the statutory grace period still count, so a tight Senate margin may not be settled on election night.
