November in Wichita: First Freeze Season, Big Swings, Layer Up

South-central Kansas trades October's calm for the year's most theatrical weather month — 70s one day, a hard freeze the next. What to do about it now.

November in Wichita: First Freeze Season, Big Swings, Layer Up (Wichita Air Capital News)

November is the month Wichita weather stops pretending to be stable. Average highs slide from the mid-60s at the start of the month toward the low 50s by its end, average lows settle below freezing, and the season's first hard freezes and first flakes of snow typically arrive — though in Kansas, 'typically' does a lot of work.

The pattern to know is the cold front. Arctic air has an unobstructed runway down the plains, and Wichita can drop 30 degrees between a warm afternoon and the following morning when a front passes with the northwest winds locals call a blue norther's Kansas cousin.

For homeowners, the seasonal checklist is short and worth doing before the first deep freeze: disconnect and drain garden hoses, insulate exposed pipes, service the furnace, and check that outdoor faucets are protected. Frozen-pipe calls are the region's most predictable winter expense and the most preventable.

Drivers should expect the month's other signature: mornings with frost or patchy fog, and the season's first chance of a light snow or ice glaze — usually brief, always over-covered, and a good reason to slow down on bridges and overpasses, which freeze before roadways.

The National Weather Service office in Wichita issues forecasts and any watches or warnings for Sedgwick County, and its winter outlook messaging this season emphasizes the swings rather than any single storm.

The good news buried in the month: November also delivers some of the clearest, calmest days of the Kansas year — the ones that make the Keeper of the Plains at sunset worth the trip.
