Ice in the Air Capital: The Wichita Thunder's Season Is Under Way Downtown
The ECHL's Thunder, a Wichita institution since 1992, give the city its winter soundtrack at INTRUST Bank Arena — checks, horns and all.

Wichita's longest-running winter habit skates at INTRUST Bank Arena, where the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL have played since 1992, making the franchise one of the older names in minor league hockey.
The Thunder's season runs through the heart of winter, and November is when the roster settles: affiliate assignments from the NHL pipeline stabilize, lines find their chemistry, and the club's place in the Mountain Division picture begins to form.
Minor league hockey sells an experience the majors can't: low glass, loud building, affordable seats, and theme nights that range from military appreciation to the gloriously unserious. The Thunder's downtown arena, opened in 2010 with about 13,000 seats for hockey, anchors a game-night economy of restaurants and bars in the blocks around it.
The franchise's history includes championships in its early years in the old Central Hockey League and generations of fans who learned the sport at the Kansas Coliseum before the move downtown. Youth hockey in the Wichita area feeds on the Thunder's visibility, with local programs pointing kids toward the same ice.
For newcomers, the Thunder offer the easiest ticket in town to understand: fast, physical, and done in about two and a half hours, with the city's skyline waiting outside the doors.
November's home dates stack up as the holidays approach. The Air Capital, it turns out, also does ice.
